How many times do you say “I hate Mondays”, “I hate my job!”, or see posts on social media about how your friends are so unhappy with everything in their life?
What so many people do not realize is that if you are unhappy with your life then nothing is going to change unless you do.
Several years ago I was working for a great company, received numerous awards including an all expense paid vacation to a 5-star resort, and was in line for a promotion. You would think that with all of that I would have been extremely happy. Unfortunately, I wasn’t.
I felt that I was living to work, wasn’t growing in life, and was often feeling burnt out and exhausted. I realized that I wasn’t happy and needed to do something to change my life.
Shortly after making that decision, I left everything and decided to start over.
Since then, now several years later, I am the happiest that I have ever been in my life and have realized that if you’re not consistently happy then there is nobody to blame except yourself.
I don’t believe that it’s possible for us to always be happy in extreme circumstances, such as immediately after the loss of a loved one, but it is possible to at least be happy overall on a day-to-day basis.
For the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: “If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?” And whenever the answer has been “no” for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something. – Steve Jobs
Do you want to make a change in your life? Here are the steps that I would recommend to help achieve happiness. If you feel unhappy and unsatisfied with your life then you owe it to yourself to do something different.
1. First, admit to yourself that you are not happy
Do you wish that things were different? Do you think that your life has more potential? You can’t change anything if you aren’t aware that something needs to be changed.
2. Determine the reason why you’re unhappy
This could be because of your job, relationship, maybe you feel like you’re not growing or progressing in life, or maybe you’re doing something that you’re not passionate about.
What is the exact reason that you’re unhappy? What do you wish could be different?
Take a moment and picture the life that you feel would make you the happiest. What is different from the life that you have now? Do you have a better job or are running your own business? Are you in a relationship with a different type of person? Are you doing something that you’ve always wanted to do?
3. Realize that happiness is a choice
Nick Vujicic, an inspiring man born in Melbourne, Australia, was born without arms and legs. It’s difficult for most people to imagine going through life and being happy with any kind of disability at all, but yet after living with something that most people cannot imagine, he says that he is extremely happy and has dedicated his life to spreading a message of positivity and hope to millions worldwide.
All of us have struggles, difficult circumstances, and turmoil in our life, but we have the choice either to have negative thoughts and spend our days feeling miserable or to change our mindset and realize that we are the only ones responsible for our own happiness.
4. Make a list of absolutely everything that you’re grateful for
If you’ve determined that you’re not happy, think of absolutely and everything that you can be grateful for and make a list of the at least 10 things that first come into your mind. This could be for your family, your health, your relationship, or even what you had for breakfast this morning.
Make a practice of doing this every morning and you will not only learn a lot more about yourself but you will also notice a change in your mood and mindset, for the better, because of it.
5. Determine what you need to do to feel happy
Realize that only you are in control of your own life and figure out exactly what you need to do right now to change it for the better. This could be getting a new job, starting your own business, finding someone who makes you happy, or maybe learning a skill that you’ve always wanted to learn. Realize what these things are and set them as your ultimate goals.
6. Make it happen and change your life.
After you have your goals, determine exactly what you need to do and make it happen! There may be several steps that you need to take to complete your ultimate goal, but the biggest thing is to just start the journey by working on the smallest step first.
You may not achieve all of your goals immediately, and most likely you will struggle and it will be difficult, but the thing is that you are working towards it so get excited about it!
You only have one chance at this life so let’s make it the absolute best life that you could possibly have!
